#12 (0.35mm) — Standard
This is the workhorse. Traditional tattooing was built on #12 needles — bold lines, saturated color packing, efficient coverage. When you’re laying down thick black outlines or packing solid traditional fields, you want the extra ink flow that 0.35mm pins deliver. Heavier on the skin, faster in the chair.
Needle Groupings and Their Specific Uses
This is where cartridge selection gets tactical. The same 12-gauge pin creates completely different effects depending on how the manufacturer solders the grouping.
Round Liners (RL)
Pins soldered in a tight circle, with all points meeting at a single contact point. RLs are your outline machines. The result is clean, crisp lines that heal sharp. Single needle 1RL and 3RL configurations are the go-to for fine-line and micro-tattoo specialists.
Round Shaders (RS)
Same circular arrangement, but the pins are spaced further apart. That spacing means each pin enters skin at a slightly different point, creating a thicker, softer line than an RL of the same count. RS needles work beautifully for thicker decorative lines, small area fills, and soft transitions where you want coverage without the hard edge of a magnum.

Magnums (M1 / M2)
Two parallel rows of needles, stacked flat. This is your color-packing and shading weapon. More needles in contact with skin means more ink deposited per pass — magnums cover large areas efficiently. Short Taper (1.5mm–2.5mm)

Long Taper (3.5mm–5.5mm)

Bold lines, saturated color, minimal blending. Reach for #12 7RL or 9RL for thick outlines that stay sharp after healing. Pack color with #12 flat or stacked magnums — the heavier gauge punches in solid saturation efficiently. Short to long tapers. No bugpins needed here.

Black & Grey Realism
Seamless gradients and soft blends are the whole game. Drop to #08 or #10 curved magnums — the smaller gauge and curved profile let you build tones without visible steps. Long or super long tapers minimize skin trauma when you’re working the same area repeatedly to build density. This is where your membrane quality matters most — realism sessions run long, and you need consistent needle performance hour after hour.

Fine Line / Micro-Tattoos
Less is more. 1RL or 3RL configurations with long tapers give you the surgical precision these tiny pieces demand. Bugpin gauges (#08) are common here — the finer pin creates thinner lines that still hold after healing. Light touch, minimal saturation, impeccable needle quality. One hooked needle ruins a micro-piece.

Neo-Traditional
This is where versatility pays off. #10 gauges handle most of the work — 7RL or 9RL for varied line weights, curved magnums for soft blends, flats for hard edges in ornamental elements. Keep multiple configurations loaded on your machine and switch freely.

Before every session, run the needle point across a disposable ink cap at a shallow angle. If the needle catches or drags instead of gliding smoothly, you have a bent or hooked tip. Discard immediately — a hooked needle tears skin rather than entering cleanly, causing unnecessary trauma and poor healing.

Sterilization
